Help

Welcome! This site is a shared place for our family's recipes. Everyone has their own cookbook, and you can browse all of them together.

Browsing recipes

You don't need to log in to look at recipes.

The home page shows a colored tile for each person's cookbook (with how many recipes it holds), followed by every recipe as a picture card. Click a tile to see just that person's cookbook, or click a card to open the recipe.

Narrowing things down

On a phone, the links at the top fold into a menu (the three-bar button).

Using a recipe

Open a recipe to see its photo, description, who it's from, yield, prep and cook times, categories, ingredients, instructions and tips. Click a category chip to see more recipes like it.

Cook mode

Cook mode makes the recipe easier to use while your hands are busy.

  1. Open a recipe and switch on Cook mode (above the instructions).
  2. The text gets bigger.
  3. Tap any ingredient or step to cross it off. Tap again to bring it back.
  4. On supported phones and browsers, the screen stays awake while you cook. If your browser can't do this, the page tells you, and you may want to turn off auto-lock in your phone settings.
  5. Switch it off, or press Esc, when you're done. Crossed-off items are forgotten when you leave cook mode.

Tip: when cook mode is on, the page address ends in #cook. Bookmark that address to open the recipe straight into cook mode.

Printing

Use the Print button at the bottom of the recipe. Buttons and controls are left off the printout.

Logging in

Click Log in in the top bar and enter the username and password an admin gave you. If you don't have one yet, ask an admin to add you.

Adding and editing your recipes

Once you're logged in, the top bar shows My cookbook, All recipes, Add recipe and Profile.

Add a recipe

Click Add recipe (or Add a recipe on your cookbook page) and fill in the form:

Field Notes
Name Required.
Description A short line about the dish. Optional.
Categories Tick as many as fit. The list is set up by the site admins.
Image JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP, up to 5 MB. Large photos are shrunk automatically. If you skip it, a default picture is used.
Ingredients Required: at least one. One ingredient per box, such as "2 cups flour". Click Add another ingredient for more boxes. Empty boxes are ignored.
Yield For example "4 servings" or "12 cookies". Optional.
Prep time / Cook time Whole numbers of minutes (45, not "45 min"). Optional.
Preparation The steps. Use the toolbar for bold, italic, underline, numbered or bulleted lists, indent and links.
Tips Optional notes. Same toolbar. The Tips section only appears on the recipe if you write something.

Click Save. If something is missing or wrong, the page tells you what to fix, and what you typed is kept. (If you pick an image and there's a problem elsewhere in the form, choose the image again after fixing it.)

Edit or delete a recipe

Open one of your recipes and click Edit this recipe. Change what you like and click Save. To replace the photo, choose a new image under Change image.

At the bottom of the edit page, Delete this recipe removes it permanently after a confirmation. It can't be undone.

You can only edit and delete your own recipes. Admins can change anyone's. You won't see the Edit button on other people's recipes.

Your profile

Click Profile to change:

Your username can't be changed. Ask an admin if you need that.

Troubleshooting

I can't log in. Check your username (it isn't the same as your display name) and password. After several wrong tries you must wait 15 minutes. If you've forgotten your password, ask an admin to reset it.

It logged me out while I was typing a recipe. You're logged out after 4 hours with no activity. Log in again and re-enter the recipe. For long ones, save early and edit afterwards.

My picture won't upload. Use a JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP under 5 MB. Photos straight from a phone camera are usually fine, but if one fails, try a smaller copy.

The Preparation and Tips boxes look like plain text boxes. The formatting toolbar loads from the internet. Check your connection and reload. You can still type and save without it.

There's no Cook mode switch. It needs JavaScript to be on in your browser. Reload the page.

I can't find a recipe. Check whether a category filter is on (click All to clear it), and try searching for an ingredient instead of the name. On your cookbook page you only see your own recipes. Use All recipes to see everyone's.

I can't edit a recipe. You can only edit your own. Ask the person who added it, or an admin.
